GENITAL ANOMALIES AND INFECTION
Saturday 8th 11.55am
Dr Vanita Parekh
Sexual health physician who got into sexual assault medicine following a case of a young woman who was raped and couldn’t be forensically examined. This woman’s mother knew the Chief minister of the ACT and within the week we had funding for a sexual assault service. I said yes sure I can do that 7 years ago. I really enjoy working in the specialty and am grateful to that young woman for having the strength to speak out and thereby ensuring a service in Canberra ( FAMSAC).
OVERVIEW
Genital anomalies and infections-to see what to see – Dr Vanita Parekh
It is difficult to report back in words a session so full of pictures. Vanita did a great job in covering a host of genital findings that could complicate an examination following a sexual assault. In particular she showed two slides of "fissures". One was "knife cut lesions" in Hart’s line associated with known Crohn’s disease and the other an anal lesion where Crohn’s was suspected and neither was related to sexual assault.
It was also interesting that others occasionally have a difficulty telling when a circumcision has been performed. This session served to reinforce the difficulties with the interpretation of significance of such findings and a reminder to "Look see document and interpret".
