Semen detection using alternative light sources – Morris Odell
- Polilight and poliray: high intensity light sources Polilight cost
$18,000 Poliray cheaper
- Study purchased numerous varieties of light sources some expensive were
borrowed while cheaper purchased
- To see is semen would fluoresce on skin
- Low powered LED didn’t show fluorescence
- Expensive ones showed faintly but easiest with naked eye
- Semen is water soluble so can wash away but DNA may still show up after
being washed
- Conclusion: Useful on material but not on skin, hair may work
Fluorescent Identification (ALS) – Alternate Light Source
-Maurice Odell
- Poli lights ($18 000) and Poli rays (cheaper) used with orange goggles.
- Dried semen will fluoresce – gives off a light that is yellow.
- Light emitting diodes – LED’s cheap
- Study done for semen on skin – outcome difficult to visualise.
- Samples of semen on material – strong effect, denim is the worst for
showing semen stains.
